The Gift
Stars: Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Keanu Reeves, Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes and Hilary Swank.
With such a strong cast and a screenplay by Billy Bob Thorton and Tom Epperson, and directed by Sam Riami (A Simple Plan) you just know that this movie has the potential to be something special. And it gives me great pleasure to say that is doesn’t disappoint.
Cate stars as Annie, a widow with 3 young boys, who also just happens to be the town psychic. When a young socialite, Jessica King (Holmes) disappears, the police relunctantly call on her, on the advice of the girls fiance Wayne (Kinnear).
At first, she doesn’t know what has happened, but after a vision, Annie is able to lead them to the body of Jessica and a pandora’s box of secrets is opened, which may threaten the life of Annie.
Some scenes were very haunting to watch which I believe had splashes of the TV series Twin Peaks. The visions and dreams can be disturbing and horrific which add to the flavour of the movie. It is filled with Twists and Turns that leave you guessing and the final twist is a surprise which is always a pleasure. Cate is wonderful as Annie, but a special mention should go to Ribisi who stars as the heart-breakingly disturbed Buddy, and Reeves is actually quite good as the malevolent Donnie.
There are plenty of scary moments that make you jump, but generally sits in the genre of suspense thriller rather than horror.
