Cube
Stars: Nicole De Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, Julian Richings, Wayne Robson & Maurice Dean Wint
CUBE is certainly not a movie that is easy to write a plot summary about. Basically 6 people wake up to find themselves trabbed in a strange environment where their next move could be their last.
They find themselves trapped in a room that has 6 exits, some lead to safety and some to death in really heinous ways. It is up to the occupants to figure out the secret to the lair without wiping themselves out in the process. They have two choices : Work together and possibly live or seperate and die for certain.
There is no really well known actors in this film with perhaps the exception being Nicole De Boer who is best known as Dax in the seventh season of Star Trek : Deep Space Nine. The other actors all seem to be bit part actors who have appeared in a variety of TV shows including The X-Files.
CUBE is strangely reminiscent of a novel by Doug Masters that I read many years ago featuring his larger than life hero TNT (Thomas Nelson Twin). However the name of the book escapes me no matter how hard I try to remember it although I believe it was called “The Beast” but don’t quote me on that.
Cube never had a mainstream cinema release however it spent a considerable amount of time playing in independent cinemas where it developed a strong cult following and played for several months.
THE EXTRAS
* Director’s Commentary : Seemingly starting mid sentence there is an extremely informative discussion on what went on during the making of Cube.
* Deleted Scenes : There are 3 deleted scenes (Missing Room, Perspective & Overhead Shot) which run for about 4 minutes. 2 of them can be viewed with or without the director’s commentary explaining why they were cut but Overhead Shot misses out for some reason. All the footage is of extremely low grade and are almost unbearable to watch. Oh, and none of the scenes would have been better of left in the final cut.
* Storyboards : Three of the scenes from the movie have been disected here which are “Mesh Trap”, “Spike Trap” and “Wire Twist Trap”. The very cool feature that this has is that 2 of the 3 scenes feature the facility to watch both the storyboards and the live action sequence at the same time.
* Production Art : The production art is again broken down into three sections which are Set Design, Trap Design & Production Design. As you might have guessed this is a look at the original designs that were envisioned for the film and some differ quite dramatically from the final film.
* Theatrical Trailer
CONCLUSION
An extremely terrifying film, not for the claustophobic!!
