Friday the 13th Part 5

STARS: MELANIE KINNAMAN, JOHN SHEPHERD, SHAVAR ROSS, RICHARD YOUNG, MARCO ST. JOHN, COREY FELDMAN

Picking up where the previous ‘Final’ chapter left off, ‘A New Beginning’ finds the little boy from the last film, Tommy (John Shepherd) now a grown man being escorted to the Pinehurst Youth Development Centre aka Funny Farm slash Youth Prison. Oh, the reason you can tell it’s the same person years later, he’s wearing the same glasses!

Traumatised by his experiences years before with Jason, Tommy still hasn’t gotten over the horror, he seems to see Jason at every turn. The question is, has Tommy taken on the persona of Jason or has Jason really come back from the dead?

The formula is now set in stone, teenagers get together in a GROUP out in the backwoods (even if this time they are inmates at a mental health facility), drugs, alcohol and sex are had, the teens HAVING sex die a horrible death, the teens not HAVING sex die a horrible death, the adults looking after the teens die a horrible death, the inbred neighbours die a horrible death, the…well you get the picture. Oh, and the blonde girl survives!

Anyone looking for a genuine fright should look elsewhere, the problem with formulaic filming is that every important event is foreseen well in advance. If anything the story and the acting has regressed a bit to the point where the films are now a parody of themselves.

THE EXTRAS

Theatrical Trailer: That’s it.

CONCLUSION

By this point the producers didn’t even try to bring a sense of closure to this series, each film was set up as a stepping stone to the next. Truly one for the fans of slasher horror only.
