The Others

STARS: NICOLE KIDMAN, FIONNULA FLANAGAN, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, ALAKINA MANN, JAMES BENTLEY, ERIC SYKES, ELAINE CASSIDY

Grace (Nicole Kidman) is a mother raising two children alone in an English estate in 1945. Her two children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley) are photo-sensitive, daylight is harmful to them, as a result, the house they live in is virtually there prison.

After her servants mysteriously leave, Grace needs replacement staff and conveniently enough three people SHOW up and are immediately appointed. Mrs Mills (Fionnula Flanagan) is the head servant along with the gardener, Mr Tuttle (Eric Sykes) and the maid Lydia (Elaine Cassidy). It appears that the servants had worked at this house in the past.

Grace hears noises in the house and believes it to be either the children or the staff despite the insistence of both that it isn’t them. Anna in particular claims to have met a boy named Victor who she says is responsible for the unexplainable in the house. As the evidence mounts Grace begins to suspect that the house is indeed haunted and seeks to find a way to protect her children.

The staff know exactly what is going on but have not deemed it time for Grace to know the truth that lurks in the house. They go to some lengths to conceal the truth including the removal of gravestones, but what is it they are hiding?

The Others is a sensational horror film which uses suspense and mood to create the frights, along with some well placed sound effects. Genuinely frightening at times and with a twist at the end that is simply ingenious, this is a classic of the genre.

CONCLUSION

A traditional horror film of the highest order, this is a genuinely frightening film which must be watched at night and preferably alone. A great story with a terrific cast and the highest production values, there are unfortunately few horror films given such treatment.

With thanks to Buena Vista, The Others is available to buy September 4th.
