Synopsis: When a 30 year old, single, Greek girl meets the man of her dreams, there is bound to be problems with getting the family’s approval. Especially, when the man concerned is not Greek. Toula Portokalos had been considered “a Greek Tragedy” by her family, single, unattractive and an embarrassment, as she was unwilling to consider even going to Greece to meet a “nice Greek boy” to marry.
Toula sees the man of her dreams at her parents’ Greek restaurant. For her it was love at first sight. She then decides she wants more out of life than just being a waitress and looking after her parents. She enrols in college, dressing up and making herself attractive and gets a job in her aunts Travel Agency.
Of course the story line is predictable. The man of her dreams notices her, they go out, her family finds out, and all the predictable chaos follows. And then they decide to get married. Every Greek clich? comes out and is aired for all to see. The humour is true of all `ethnic’ comedies, be it “Wog Boy”, “Monsoon Wedding” or “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. This is not to say that this is boring, because it has been done before. Quite the contrary, this is good honest fun.
One of the best things to see is that all the clich?s we associate in Australia for a Greek family, are portrayed here in an American film. Maybe Greeks are the same everywhere except Greece.
