1 Giant Leap

Produced, Directed and Composed by Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto for Palm Pictures.

Featuring: Nenah Cherry, Maxi Jazz, Speech, Robbie Williams, Baaba Maal and Michael Stipe, Dennis Hopper and others..

Last year (2002) Triple J featured a CD as their Feature Album for that particular week. That album was the extraordinary `1 Giant Leap’. Now the men who created the CD, Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto, have released the DVD version of the same name.

Bridgeman and Catto travelled the globe and collected together different musicians, artists, cultures and people for the CD and now, the DVD.

Featuring well known musicians, such as Nenah Cherry, Maxi Jazz (Faithless), Speech (Arrested Development), Robbie Williams, Baaba Maal, and Michael Stipe (REM), each of these artists contribute their own style to each musical piece.

But to say that these are the only artists featured would be a huge and shameful understatement. This DVD is a truly “World Music” tribute in every sense. Musicians from Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, America and Europe contribute to the multi-cultural, globe trotting feel to each and every song.

There are 14 songs on `1 Giant Leap’. The two singles - “My Culture” with Maxi Jazz and Robbie Williams on vocals and “Braided Hair” with Speech and Nenah Cherry on vocals are in a separate section of their own on the DVD.

The other 12 songs are embedded into nine separate categories with speakers (including actor Dennis Hopper) interspersed throughout the songs. It makes for viewing completely different, unique and original musical video clips, incorporating different cultures, languages and musical instruments.

The categories range from “Time” to “God” to “Sex” to “Death” with each of the different speakers offering their own words of wisdom or rhetoric.

The imagery, scenery and filming of the DVD is quite beautiful and breathtaking one minute and confronting the next. `1 Giant Leap’ has been made to make the viewer enjoy and think, think about their own humanity and the humanity around them and the world. It is an extraordinary and unique work.

Really though it’s not about the imagery or the filming as wonderful as it is, but about the musical blending of completely different cultures and about 2 men who decided to share with the world their musical journey around the world.

The extras include a 40 page booklet, containing quotes and credits for each segment of the DVD.
