Fearless

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Isabella Rossellini, Rosie Perez with Tom Hulce and John Turturro.

Directed by Peter Weir.

Storyline:

Meet Max Klein (Bridges), architect, husband, father, ordinary family man one day. The next day, he boards a plane, despite not enjoying the flying experience, and the unthinkable happens - the plane crashes and he is one of the survivors. This is only the beginning of a remarkable film.

Australian Director, Peter Weir takes the audience on a journey. The journey of Max’s life after he survives a devastating plane crash and the circle of family, friends, acquaintances and fellow crash survivors who surround Max and are also touched by the crash.

Jeff Bridges’ performance as Max is a departure from the usual characters he seems to play, truly reminiscent of `Star Man’, one of his early and great films. As we follow Max thumbing his nose at God for not being able to kill him or helping fellow survivor `Carla’, who suffers a crushing loss, played so convincingly by Rosie Perez (who incidentally was nominated for an Academy Award for this role) - the audience begins to realise that Max is not only NOT dealing with the crash but believes he’s invincible, hence the film’s title `Fearless’.

Another stand out performance is from the enigmatic Isabella Rossellini as `Laura Klein’, Max’s relieved but confused wife. Her portrayal as the survivor’s wife is quite remarkable. Laura, as you could understand, at first is relieved to find out that Max survived the crash but she quickly becomes disorientated and worried by her husband’s erratic, if not downright strange, behaviour. Isabella Rossellini’s strong performance as Laura gives the film further substance.

As mentioned previously, Rosie Perez’s performance in this film is strong, emotional and raw. Well deserving of a Nomination if not, the actual award. `Carla’ has a strong sense of survivor’s guilt and also deals with the crash in her own way - by staying in bed and refusing to move. Max draws her out and back into the world.

Other notable mentions are John Turturro as `Dr Perlman’ the airline head shrink, Benicio Del Toro as Carla’s greedy, tracksuit wearing husband `Manny’ and everyone’s favourite `Q’ (Star Trek reference for those who don’t know), John de Lancie.

Overall:

“Fearless” can be slow at times but the Director has done this deliberately, to allow the intensity of other scenes throughout the film to stand out, literally leap off the screen and shock.

With a Director such as Peter Weir and strong performances from the stars Jeff Bridges, Isabella Rossellini and Rosie Perez, this remarkable film should not be missed.
