Antwone Fisher
Directed by Denzel Washington
Rated M +
Antwone Fisher is based on a book Finding Fish written by Antwone Fisher, himself. Antwone Fisher even discovered Derek Luke who plays him in this movie when he was working at a Gift Shop on the Sony Picture Lot. Only in Hollywood. This is also Denzel Washingtons film debut as a director and Joy Bryants first film as well.
Antwone Fisher is a sailor (Petty Officer) in the U.S. Navy and has anger management problems. The movie soon sees him lashing out violently when a fellow sailor makes a comment he feels is a racial slur. He is sent to Dr Jerome Davenport, a Naval Psychiatrist (Denzel Washington) for an assessment. Three sessions are allocated for Davenport to assess him but they dont begin until Antwone begins to talk which he is initially reluctant to do.
When he finally opens up, Antwone tells Davenport about his childhood, the parents he never met, his childhood friend Jesse and his violent foster mother. Once the three sessions are over, there is another outburst, and so Davenport agrees to keep seeing Fisher. Davenport gives him the confidence to talk to Cheryl (Joy Bryant), his love interest. Believe it or not, Antwone is still a virgin and I am not talking about his star sign. Antwone and Davenport form a very close relationship and Davenport becomes a father figure to him and a true friend. He is even invited to share Thanksgiving Day with Davenport and his wife.
After more sessions, Antwone is encouraged by Davenport to search for the family he never knew and so he takes Cheryl with him to try to locate them. Antwone also manages to find true love along the way.
Antwone Fisher, the movie, is truly inspirational and one of the best films I have seen all year. I must admit to shedding a few tears at the end of the film. I havent been quite so moved by a movie in a very long time.
Derek Luke is a natural in the role of Antwone and Denzel Washington shows why he is an Oscar winner. I would highly recommend this film to anybody. The movie will intrigue you from beginning to end as you watch Antwone rise from a tormented and violent childhood growing up in a home without love and respect to finally making something of his life. Davenport also manages to learn a few lessons from Antwone along the way.
Antwone Fisher is one of the best films I have seen this year. It is basically the story of Antwone Fisher and how he overcame adversity to rise from a troubled and violent childhood to find true love and happiness with the help of Naval psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Davenport. This film marks Denzels directorial debut and also the debut of two of its stars, Derek Luke and Joy Bryant.
It is an uplifting and inspirational film and I would recommend that if you see it on the DVD shelf pick in up and be prepared to shed a tear or two (I know I did).
