Serving Sara
Before watching Serving Sara I must admit to reading some of the reviews available and so my expectations of this film were not that great. However, I am happy to report that I actually got the odd chuckle or two. It is not the best comedy I have ever seen by a long way, but it is certainly not the worst.
The basic plot revolves around Joe Tyler (Matthew Perry) whose job is to serve subpoenas. It may take him a while to “get his man” but he does get the job done eventually. This is because his rival at work, Tony, is secretly trying to sabotage his efforts.
Joe’s next job is to serve divorce papers to Sara Moore (Elizabeth Hurley) who believes she is happily married to a Texan millionaire, Gordon Moore (Bruce Campbell), who owns cattle ranches across the state. He has other ideas and already has a mistress, Kate (Amy Adams). Guess what - she’s blonde !!
Even though Tony tries to foil his efforts Joe is successful in his quest to serve Sara with the divorce proceedings. However, Sara finds out that if she serves Gordon first she would be entitled to more money as the court case would be in New York and not Texas. Sara then enlists the help of Joe by offering him some of her settlement money to help her serve Gordon instead. So the race is on as Joe and Sara try to serve Gordon while at the same time trying to avoid Tony who has been instructed to serve Sara (yet again).
There are many adventures along the way. If you are a fan of Ace Ventura type comedy there is a mechanical bull scene worth watching. I also particularly liked the way Sara managed to get a Motel Room for the night with no money. Breasts have many uses. There are monster trucks to keep the boys entertained as well.
Don’t watch Serving Sara if you want to laugh yourself stupid for 90 or so minutes. It ain’t gonna happen!!! However, if you have time to kill and want a simple plot that takes little thought or effort on your behalf then Serving Sara may just be the film for you. It is not as bad as some would have you believe. Don’t expect Academy Award winning performances either.
The airport scene where Sara loses her clothes and ends up in a “TRAILER TRASH” T - shirt is particularly interesting. I think it basically sums up what Liz Hurley may have become without Hugh Grant and that Versace Dress. Let’s just say that she probably didn’t score this gig on her acting ability alone. She would not have made it big in Hollywood without her connections (or those safety pins).
Serving Sara has had more bad reviews than most movies out there. As a result my expectations weren’t that great and so I wasn’t disappointed. There are a few excellent one liners to keep you amused, but not for the 95 minutes the film runs for.
If you aren’t too fussed about given up an hour and a half to watch a “screwball comedy” then this may be the film for you. However, if time is a precious commodity you would be strongly advised to leave this film on the DVD shelf.
THE EXTRAS
There are quite a few extras available on this DVD. Most of them aren’t worth watching. Here’s a description anyway:
Scene Selection - of course !!
Deleted Scenes
There are two scenes to watch “Roadside Assistance” and “Tony asks for directions”. The second one was remotely amusing and I’m not sure why they didn’t include it in the movie.
Theatrical Trailer
This actually makes the film look good. Don’t you hate it when most of the funny bits are in the trailer.
A Look Behind the Process.
Director Reginald Hudlin and all the main actors talk about the movie and the roles they play. It is quite informative overall. This documentary runs for about 20 minutes.
Extended / Alternate Scenes
Three scenes to view here entitled “The Punch”. “Meadow Muffin” and “Missing Stapler”. Nothing too exciting here.
Out Takes
Three different out takes to view, but I am not sure why they were included really. Nothing too humorous here either.
CONCLUSION
Joe Tyler serves subpoenas and is asked to present divorce papers to Sara Moore who believes she is happily married to Gordon Moore, a Texan millionaire. Unfortunately he already has a new mistress, Kate. Sara finds out that if she serves papers to Gordon first she will be entitled to a lot more money, so she encourages Joe to help her in her quest. Let the race begin !!
