Summer Rental
Jack Chester is off to the beach for a month with wifey, two all-American kids (one boy, one girl of course) and the non-threatening family dog, but doesnt bargain on getting up the nose of a rich local (Richard Crenna). After several run-ins, Jack decides to settle things once and for all by betting this arrogant silver spooner two weeks rent that he will win the local regatta. Of course Jacks the underdog, but his family, a wayward band of retired mariners (and their fleabitten boat/floating restaurant), and race spectators all support Jacks challenge. And remember hes doing it all for the little guy. Onya Jack!
One thing I didnt mention in the front page summary is WHY you will want to see this John Candy film. Why? Because you will see how crappy it is compared to some of his other little gems. Was I watching a comedy film? You gotta be kidding me. Carl Reiner has certainly done a lot better in his career too. Barely worth the effort. I SO wont be watching this film again. Everything is so uninspired this proves that formula films easily fall over that fine line into the realm of achingly boring.
The only good thing I can say about it is that theres one recurring joke that at least raised a wry smile. Watch for the ditzy neighbour who has just had a boob job and is seeking reassurance.
THE EXTRAS
Basics only. Scene selection, trailer, audio options (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian), and subtitle options (25 counted!). Paramount is fantastic for providing decent audio and subtitle options.
CONCLUSION
Jack Chester (John Candy) is a burned out air traffic controller who is forcibly sent on holiday by his boss his first vacation in thirteen years. Jack gets the family together and heads to the beach where he soon discovers that taking it easy is not as simple as it sounds. This 1985 comedy is directed by Carl Reiner; if you like John Candy and films about Joe Average who bites back, youll want to see this.
