Dog Soldiers
Its nice to see that the Brits are bringing out some quality horror flicks. In a genre mainly comprised if American teeny horror films, Dog Soldiers is a nice change of scenery. With the recent release of 28 Days Later, I was keen to see another English horror export. And although this isnt the best horror movie Ive ever seen I enjoyed it immensely. Its obvious that they didnt have the hugest budget for this film, but even without squillions of dollars to spend on special effects the creators of Dog Soldiers did a damn good job of producing something scary, with quality acting, and decent storyline and visual appeal. The film begins with a GROUP of soldiers who are in the Scottish wilderness on a training exercise. While on the move, they come across their rivals camp and find that they have all been slaughtered. They soon realise that they are in grave danger of suffering the same fate and move to escape from whatever is lurking in the shadows. The men end up in an empty farmhouse, along with a zoologist they met in their escape, and make camp here to recoup and try to fight the creatures hunting them.I thought that Dog Soldiers was absolutely fantastic. I was a bit worried at the start as the camera work looked slightly cheap and I started to think that it was going to be hard to stay interested. I was pleasantly surprised when the film picked up pace and gore-fest began. I think most of us, who arent avid horror watchers, are conditioned to the more recent popular releases which have the more formulaic Hollywood approach to a horror story, which can make it hard to get into a film thats done in a completely different style. The fact that the movie went straight to video (in Australia at least) is most likely a testament to this. I think the thing I liked most about this film was the change from the usual style of horror movie, and the great B grade feel. The special effects were outstanding, horribly gory and explicit. In one scene one of the generals is attacked and we see him trying to poke his intestines back in after his gut has been split open. Priceless. Even the werewolves, who looked a bit like a man with a furry suit one, were believable enough to be scary. I think theres something that the British do really well in a horror movie; there is some spooky quality that they have which I cant quite put my finger on. Maybe its because I watched The Day of the Triffids when I was about 9 and was so petrified I had to turn it off.I really recommend this film to people who love a bit of a scare and are prepared to watch something a bit different from your normal horror movie. Also any fans of werewolf films will thoroughly enjoy it Im sure.
