Waking up in Reno

Lonnie & Darlene (Played by Thornton & Richardson) have been married too long, in an attempt to help their failing marriage, they decide to take a trip. Lonnie is a car dealer who is always looking for a piece of the action, so he arranges to drive one of his newest 4WD vehicles to the monster truck Rally in Reno with their best friends, Candy and Roy (Played by Swayze & Theron). Candy and Roy are trying to have a baby and they hope the change of scenery might help.

In the days before they are due to leave Lonnie and Candy have an affair, & at the same time Roy sees a Doctor to try to find out if he is the problem in the baby making department. The four friends set out on the trip confident that as long as none of this information comes out they should have a good trip.

The trip is not without incident, before they have even left the city limits they are pulled over by the police for running a stop light and drink driving, so you know it’s going to be a long journey. The group stop at a restaurant famous for it’s 72-ounce streak and Lonnie rises to the challenge of trying to eat a whole steak in order to win a $50 bet. Roy and Candy are also on a mission, so every time Candy’s body reaches the correct temperature the group has pit stop so Roy can “plant his seed”.

Everything is going smoothly, and Lonnie (who is unofficially in charge) is able to change plans to ensure the group stay on schedule, until all hell breaks loose; Roy finds out he is Sterile, Darlene and Roy find out the affair and Candy finds out she is pregnant. The dynamics of the friendship changes forever, the fighting begins and you are left to fear for the safety of the friends and the 4WD.

This is an hilarious look at couple hood and friendship, there are some really funny moments and the timing is pretty good. Although I have to admit that at times the story line was just too complicated and the acting was a bit below par. The plot is quite twisted and I just didn’t feel like trying to follow it all. Some of the scenes are a bit corny and whilst I did laugh it was not due to comedic genius, it was more just a case of giving in and going with the flow of the movie. The four stars are quite young and the inexperience shows through however I don’t think this was ever meant to be a giant Hollywood Blockbuster so its not too disappointing for what it is.
