Bad Eggs
For fans of corny Australian humour this is a must have. Mick Malloy is hilarious as Ben Kinnear, an undercover cop with an idiot for partner (played by Bob Franklin). Together Ben and Mike manage to totally stuff up everything they touch whilst on duty for the Zero Tolerance Unit, until they are finally demoted back to uniform duties. On the beat once again the duo continue to leave a trail of destruction, burning down houses, ruining funerals etc, and in the style of Maxwell Smart they manage to uncover a crime ring of corruption that goes right to the top of the police force. Ben is helped along the way by a jaded reporter Julia Bale (played by Judith Lucy) she also happens to be an ex-cop and Ben’s ex-girlfriend. Ben and Mike are desperate to clear their names and rejoin the Zero Tolerance Unit, but will need all the help they can get.
The cast is made up of some of Australia’s best-known comedians and actors and they all work well together to produce a well-blended masterpiece of comedy and drama. Malloy has such a good sense of humour and it infiltrates the whole movie. The plot is easy to follow and I found the movie really easy to watch and enjoy. Judith Lucy is brilliant as the journalist, her facial expressions alone would be enough but her clever use of timing just adds to the story. There is lots of sight humour here as well as clever dialogue (it’s full of funny one liners) and it’s the sort of movie you can watch a few times and find new laughs each time. I enjoyed this DVD and feel that for people who appreciate and enjoy the Aussie sense of humour it’s a must have in the collection.
THE EXTRAS
Directors Commentary- “Tony Martin and guests talk throughout the entire film. Appalling” Exactly ! I’m not really too sure what the appeal of directors commentary is I always find them a bit boring.
Cast commentary - “Tony Martin, Mick Malloy, Judith Lucy, Pete Smith, Alan Brough, Shaun Micallef, And Bill Hunter. Largely incoherent” I have to agree- there are some funny lines here but mostly its just the cast reminiscing and I feel it’s a stretch to refer to it as a “special feature”.
Over Easy: “on location with Bad Eggs 65 minute documentary. A wank.”
I found the interesting but just in passing don’t buy the DVD just for this, but if you have a spare hour its not too bad. It has interviews of the stars and whilst interesting the humour is a bit forced.
One Deleted Scene- “hardly worth watching”. I agree- I like it when there are lots of deleted scenes, but I guess these guys really knew what they wanted right from the start, & didn’t waste money making scenes they were not going to use.
Trailer, Storyboards Still Galleries. “Does anyone look at this stuff”
The Trailer was quite good- I remember seeing it as a TV add & really wanting to see the movie so I guess it was a good trailer. The stills are a bit useless and unnecessary, but…
Interview with composers David Graney & Clare Moore “Promo for the CD”
More interviews boring stuff don’t waste your time here.
Bonus Short the last Aussie Auter. “Padding”. This was really funny watching it! Tongue in cheek look at the film makers in Australia D Generation made this clip in the early 90’s quite funny!
