Knockabout Guys

This movie is a very good twist on the family life of the American Mobsters. It centres around the son of one of Brooklyn’s Mob leaders, a guy named Matty and his GROUP of friends. They’re all sons of the mob and are fed up with being the ‘knockabout guys’ collecting debts and fetching the lunches of their fathers.

It all starts off with Matty, aged twelve in the back of a car being driven to his first murder. His father has just been busted by the cops and his father’s assistant, Teddy is ready to SHOW Matty their life. But being only twelve and HAVING a ‘family friend’ pleading for his life Matty can’t do it, so is sent out of the place.

We are then taken to modern day where Matty is being interviewed for a sports manager’s job. Being part of the Mob family doesn’t necessarily get you any job you want though, so Matty is faced with the decision of forgetting a ‘normal’ life or working for his father. Unfortunately life is easier working for Dad, Benny Chains.

Matty’s first assignment is to pick up a bag of cash in another state. With a little help from his three mates it seriously can’t be too hard. There’s Taylor the tough guy with a body like a tank, Chris who lives off his father’s name and his mate Marbles who is a pilot with a small aircraft, perfect to get that bag over the state line without suspicion. He has to stop for fuel though in a little country town and unfortunately for him the cops just seem to be waiting for him.

Being told not to let the bag out of his sight and trying to dispose of the cocaine he’s just been sniffing, proves too much for Marbles and leaves the bag outside the terminal while he pays for his fuel. That’s when the money bag goes missing and Matty and his three mates start their treasure hunt for the bag. How hard can it be to locate a bag full of cash last seen in a small town airstrip? With some dirty cops and two stoned guys thrown in it’s not as easy as it could be. A lot of gun and fist fights all add to the pumped up action.

THE EXTRAS

The directors have done a full documentary, scene by scene on the movie. There are some interesting comments but unless you loved the movie and have the time don’t go there. They have also included some deleted and alternative scenes, with or without director’s commentary which is worth the time. Then they have the trailer which is a very good summary of the movie.

CONCLUSION

When the son of a Mob boss takes on his first real job for Dad it seems too simple. One bag full of cash, a plan flight over state lines and unfortunately some cops at the right place at the wrong time. In such a small town it has to be easy to pick out the ones with the bag, surely.
