All About the Benjamins

This is a very amusing comedy about a bounty hunter and a petty criminal. It starts off with Hardaway (Ice Cube) attempting to catch a criminal playing around with lots of money in his trailer. It’s not an easy bust but he does get his man after blowing up half a trailer park which gives the sound system something to go on about. But the boss isn’t happy with the way things were handled and threatens to fire him - one more stuff up and he’s on his own.

His next job is to recatch a petty criminal, Reggie (Mike Epps) who Hardaway is not pleased about dealing with again but things soon heat up and Hardaway gets into trouble with the boss yet again and taken off the case. But Hardaway isn’t finished with Reggie and is determined to put an end to his criminal career.

Reggie has other things on his mind other than being caught by Hardaway and manages to get himself caught up in a million dollar diamond heist while running from him. When Hardaway finally catches up Reggie tells him what he knows about the heist and Hardaway, knowing this could help his career greatly, does a deal with Reggie. They agree to act as partners until the diamonds are found and the case closed.

It all sounds pretty good but there’s also the factor of Reggie’s girlfriend’s winning lottery ticket. The ticket is worth a cool $18 million but Reggie has dropped it with his wallet in the getaway van owned by the diamond thieves. Unfortunately for Reggie they find the wallet and now have his address and plan to kill him and anyone who gets in their way.

With a little help from Reggie’s girlfriend and Hardaway’s secretary things work themselves out, not before a lot of fast car chases, gunfire and very clever jokes. One warning, if you’re a lover of expensive tropical fish this movie might offend you.

I wasn’t super enthused about the idea of some rap star in a movie about gangsters but I was pleasantly surprised. This will never go down in the annals of movie history as one of the greats but it was amusing and I did find myself sucked in to the story. It was a nice little diversion that might get anothe run one day down the track.

THE EXTRAS

Include a director’s commentary which drags on, some short and sweet documentaries about the making of the movie, one deleted scene, some amusing stuff ups, a music video relating to the movie, two trailers, one for cinema audiences and one for T.V. audiences, a special hidden feature and a theatrical “press kit”.

CONCLUSION

A bounty hunter getting tired of his boss’ antics is taken off the case that could be the one that starts his own business. With millions of dollars worth of diamonds stolen and a criminal with too much information and a lost winning lottery ticket as his partner, he plans to solve this one, with or without his boss’ permission.
