A Little Romance

A gorgeous little tale of young love and the pursuit of forever. Lauren is a 13-year-old American girl who lives in Paris with her mother and stepfather. Lauren is incredibly intelligent and finds it hard to relate to the other kids at her school, she is lonely and longs to have a friend she can share her time with. The closest friend she has is Natalie, another American girl who’s no match for Lauren intellectually. Everything changes for Lauren one day when she meets Bogie a 13-year-old French boy. Bogie is a genius too, and Lauren is fascinated to find and equal who is also a peer, they share many long conversations and it’s not too long before the first feelings of young love abound.

Lauren and Bogie form a firm friendship with Julius, (played by Olivier) a gentleman they met in the park. Julius is a breath of fresh air for the kids; he treats them as equals, tells amazing tales of far away places, and leaves them both wanting to spend more time with him. Julius tells the pair a tale of the bridge of Sigh’s in Venice and claims that if lovers kiss under the bridge at sunset they will be in love forever.

One morning Lauren is devested to find out that her family is moving back to the US, and in desperation she hatches a plan to run away with Bogie to the bridge in Venice. Bogie and Lauren know they will not be able to cross the border into Italy alone so they tell Julius they want to go and see Lauren’s sick mother in Venice and ask if he will accompany them. Julius agrees but things go horribly wrong when Lauren’s family believe she has been kidnapped and because of Julius’ criminal record he is accused of masterminding the whole thing.

Lauren and Bogie and Julius, must try to get across Italy and into Venice without being caught to make their dream come true. Along the way, they will discover things about each other and themselves that will change their lives forever.

This was a beautiful DVD and a pleasant change to see a movie without any language or sex scenes. Rated PG it’s one of those movies that’s suitable for just about everybody to watch and enjoy. The plot is quite clever and snippets of information become available through out the movies that change the outcome. I would not call this a movie of high action or adventure but it is a really good story, retold well with lots of beautiful scenery and credible acting.
