Wolves of the Sea
This is yet another brilliant documentary that aired on the ABC and is now available on DVD. Narrated by David Attenborough the story of the killer whales from around the world is simply riveting. The footage shot in the oceans of killer whales feeding mating playing and living is fantastic. Until recently very little was known of these cunning and efficient killing machines, but researchers have combined their knowledge to piece together a more accurate picture of these mammals.
The documentary compares killer whales from all around the world and explains the major differences in the habits and lifestyles of each pod. The filmmakers’ patience has been rewarded with some brilliant footage of whales, arguably the most memorable being that of the whales in shallow water catching young seals. Informative and interesting this DVD was able to hold the attention of my 6 & 9-year-old boys right until the end and they loved particularly love the footage of a pod of whales communicating with each other as they rounded up a shoal of fish for dinner. There are many interesting facts about the different families of killer whales, relayed on this DVD. David Attenborough makes a particular effort to explain that all killer whales are not the same and dispels many myths about these creatures too. The scenes flow together well as they tell the story of the killer whales.
There are so many clich?s that could describe how great this DVD is, but I’m constantly amazed at how much my kids have taken in when they watch this style of program and they now consider themselves “experts” on Killer whales. This is definitely a DVD that’s worth owning.
THE EXTRAS
As an added bonus this DVD also includes a short documentary only about 5 minutes in total ..Mysteries of the ocean wonders - a
natural history of the Albatross. This too was very good, I guess we are so spoilt with such good filming these days it’s easy to
forget the hours and skills that are required to get footage like this. This Documentary follows the life of Albatross’ and is jam
packed full of fascinating facts about these birds.
