Defending Your Life

Daniel Miller (played by Brooks) is a moderately successful man who let

opportunities pass him by his whole life, because he was afraid of the

consequences. He was always content to settle for second best and learnt at an early age to avoid confrontation at all costs. Daniel had just bought a new car and was enjoying a drive, he reached down to change tapes and the car was hit by an oncoming bus killing him instantly.

Daniel wakes up to find he is in Judgment City and the peaceful after death he always thought existed is a hoax. Daniel’s life is on trial and with the help of a court appointed “lawyer” he must defend his actions on earth, and prove he is worthy of moving on to the after life.

Things are not going well for Daniel he is being torn apart by the defense and looks certain to be sentenced to a return to earth. All seems lost, until Daniel meets Julia (played by Meryl Streep). Julia is vibrant and funny and she lived a full and fearless life, she has such a presence about her and Daniel falls in love. Julia loves Judgment city, mainly because you can eat all you like and never gain an ounce,

Julia will definitely be moving on to the afterlife. If Daniel is going to be able to stay with Julia he must convince the court that he is not afraid.

This was such a good movie I really enjoyed this different interpretation of “life” after death. Meryl Streep is fantastic as Julia, and Albert Brooks is absolutely convincing as Daniel, together they make a great on screen couple. Albert Brooks wrote and directed this Movie and his ability as a director is just as amazing as his acting. The plot works well here and there is no shortage of laughs as Daniel’s life is replayed before the court. I love romantic comedies that have a solid story and credible acting and this is a great DVD to add to the collection.
