Peter Pan

WOW! This is a great retelling of an old favourite.

Wendy Darling and her brothers Michael & John are awoken from their beds late one night by Peter Pan and taken to Neverland. Wendy has had a long and trying day and knows that it won’t be too long before she has to grow up. Peter Pan offers her a life in Neverland where she will never have to be grown up again. Peter’s archenemy Captain Hook is delighted to see that Peter Pan had returned to Neverland and is eagre to continue his war with him.

The Lost Boys of Neverland have waited patiently too for Peter to return, and are surprised when he shows up with 3 other children. The Lost Boys want Wendy to be their mother, and spend her time telling them stories. With all of this going on Tinker Bell, Peter Pan’s favourite little fairy, is terribly jealous of Wendy. She sets about finding ways to get rid of her.

Great sword fights and heaps of action, coupled with some really well timed slap stick humour; this movie is a real winner. I watched this through by myself and spent the whole thinking “gee my kids would love this” & whey they watched it the next day, they did!

The story of Peter Pan is simple and the characters are so lovable and innocent that kids are naturally drawn to it. The makers of this movie have done a fantastic job or creating a believable Neverland and Jeremy Sumpter is the most adorable Peter Pan ever. They also claim this to be the first time Peter Pan has been made into a feature movie with a live cast. After the success of animation and theatre it seems a natural progression for a movie to be made of one of the most loved stories of our time. This is a DVD you will want to own.

THE EXTRAS

The Bonus Features are made up of a series of short flicks on the making of Peter Pan, including interviews with the cast and crew.

A Grand Tour into the Peter Pan Magic. For people interesting in the history of Pan this is a really interesting bonus. My only complaint (and it is trivial), was the menu was missing a “Play All” feature so I had to constantly press the remote to get to see more. Each block of short films are in groups according to which set they were filmed on.

The Pirate Ship - Neverland the Island - The Darling house - The Streets of London and The Black Castle. It was really interesting to

see how all the special effects were created e.g. how they made the characters fly and how Tinkerbell was created.

There is also a short film with Sarah Fergusson on the set, trying out the flying gadgetry and interviewing the people who are connected to the author of the original Peter Pan Novel.

Fantastic stuff!
