Tuck Everlasting

A tale of timeless young love, “Tuck Everlasting: is a beautiful story of a young girl trying to find her place in a society that stifles any from of individuality. Winifred Foster is the daughter of a wealthy landowner and is expected to take her place in society and conform. When her mother catches Winnie talking to a bounty hunter in the street, her parents threaten to ship her of to boarding school to learn etiquette and manners. Distraught at the thought of a prison like boarding school, Winnie runs away and hides in the woods. In the woods Winnie meets up with Jesse, the youngest member of the Tuck Family. The Tuck family have been living in the woods that Winnie?s family own, for years and years unknown to Winnie and her family.

Jesse?s brother Miles sees Jesse talking to Winnie and believing that Winnie will tell others of their family secret, Miles kidnaps Winnie and takes her back to the Tuck family home. The Tucks will now have to decide what to do; they cannot risk their secret being discovered, and they don?t know if they can trust Winnie.

At the Tucks home deep in the woods, Winnie discovers an unreal world where time is not important and, etiquette and manners are made up of what comes naturally instead of uncomfortable society rules. Winnie falls in love with the whole family and a part of her wants to remain with them forever.

Winnie?s family are desperate to find her and when a stranger in a yellow suit comes to town and proclaims that he would be able to find the girl if he was given access to the woods, Winnie?s father agrees. The Tucks know it?s just a matter of time before they are discovered and will have to move on. When that happens Winnie will have to decide between her old stifled life and the exciting adventures of the Tuck family.

This was a fantastic story but I found I spent the first half of the movie frustrated by not really understanding what was going on, and trying to work out what the ?secret? was. There was not enough ?clues? to guess and in the end it was just plain annoying and spoilt the mood of the movie, (rather than being able to enjoy the moments in the movie I was trying to sort it out). I watched the movie a second time and really enjoyed it, so I guess they should have ?revealed all? earlier in the story. The cast was fabulous and the acting superb, I have watched several new releases and must say that, the lack of computer generated special effects was refreshing and makes this movie even more appealing.

This DVD is a great ?escape? - save it for a day when you need a pick me up; this movie is the perfect lift after a tiring day.

THE EXTRAS

The bonus features are mainly blurb on the casts view of the making of the film, the usual cast commentary and audio commentary are featured too and is basically what you would expect to find on a recently released DVD.

A different slant is the ?Lessons of Tuck? a feature you can turn on or off with the remote control. Basically it?s a replay of the movie with yhe actors stopping the film at certain points and adding their opinion of the last scene. When the discussion is finished, the movie just continues on. I found this to be a bit disjointed but was OK. The discussion asks the same question of a variety of people from the author of the film, to the ?Man on the Street?.. a few 17 year olds and some of the actors in the movie. It displays a variety of opinions and was interesting to hear such a range of answers for the one question.

A visit with the author of Tuck Everlasting. Natalie Babbit - An interview style featurette with Natalie Babbit on discussing writing a novel, and her life in general. This was good - something different.
