The Big Wet

I have to admit I have become a bit of a ?documentary junkie?, since becoming a DVD reviewer and the King of Documentaries it undoubtedly the ABC. Their ability to find high quality productions is second to none. The Big Wet is a fine example of this high quality.

Filmed in the ?Top End? of Australia; (mainly in Kakadu National park and Arnhem-land), this documentary covers the metamorphosis from dry to wet that the Northern Part of Australia undergoes each year. The northern most part of Australia is a land of contrast and each change in season brings about incredible change. The makers of this film have patiently waited and watched with their cameras, to ensure that the full beauty of the changes are depicted. The filming has been done over a 6-month period from September to March and the full effects of the seasonal changes are credibly portrayed.

The film not only concentrates on the landscape, but also looks at the inhabitants and the adaptations they have to make in order to survive the massive changes in conditions. There is brilliant footage of Saltwater Crocodiles and the narrator (John Waters) is quick to point out the adaptations that the wild life has made. The narration is an easy flowing style and truly enhances the beautiful footage of the Kakadu. This is not a long film, running just under an hour, but the detail and footage is fantastic, well worth owning.

?..Makes you want to rush out and buy a holiday to the Never Never? Like they say in the ads - you?ll never never know if you never never go. But if you have to stay home this DVD is the next best thing to seeing it live.
