Johnny Mnemonic is a story set in the future, the main contraband that is trafficked throughout the world is data. Who ever controls the data controls the world. The best way to transport data without detection is to use a human ?Mnemonic? these people have a special implant in the brain that allows them to carry the data. The mnemonics have a limited capacity and if they exceed this they may die.

Johnny (played by Keanu Reeves) has hooked up the wrong crowd and is now forced to be a mnemonic carrier. He wants out and is told by his ?boss? that this one last job will clear his debt and free him from the job. This job is big and Johnny removes some of his own childhood memory in order to free up space in his head to hold the data. He exceeds his capacity and is in grave danger if he misses the download point.

The job goes horribly wrong when the sender company is attacked and all the members of the team are killed. The team Johnny was courier for had found a cure for a neurological disease that is affecting more than half the population and wanted to get it on the market. The rival company was making too much money from the treatment of this disease and are determined to stop them. Johnny escapes and is on the run, his contact for the download double crosses him and Johnny is not sure whom he can trust anymore. His time is running out and he has to get the data out of his head before it kills him. Johnny teams up with a girl, who is suffering from the same neurological disease, and is forced to enlist the help of her gang of questionable friends. Johnny?s life hangs on the ability of her friends to work together to defeat the most organised crime group in the world.

The drama in this is quite good there is lots of action and some pretty good fight scenes. The story is a little far fetched but it all comes together nicely in this DVD. There are some wild creations and the sets are really far out, with heaps of contraptions and gizmos, making it a feast for lovers of Sci-Fi. The plot is not very involved and there are only a few main characters so it is easy to follow, and you won?t be left wondering what?s going on. The movie is not too long only approx 90 minutes, so its perfect for a slow weekend on the couch.
