Paycheck
Directed by John Woo.
Set in the future, Michael is a successful engineer; top of his field. He is employed by top companies to do top secret computerised installations and developments. Once Michael has finished each assignment he is injected with a chemical to make him forget the work he has done, protecting both him and the company he has worked for. Each assignment lasts about 6 weeks, so when Michael is offered a three year assignment that pays 96 million dollars, he is suspicious but keen to have the money. He trustingly walks into the three year assignment against the wishes of his friends and associates.
Michael ?wakes up? one morning after three years absence and whilst he has no memory of the last three years he knows something is wrong. The FBI raid his home and take him in for questioning. Michael cannot give them any information, but because Michael has snippets of memory, he remembers just enough to let him know that he is in great danger. Michael makes a daring escape following a string of coincidences that allow him to get out of a double locked room in front of 20 guards.
Michael had sent himself an envelope of 20 seemingly useless personal items including a bus ticket and a pair of glasses the week before his arrest and he used two of these items to escape. Then he ran to a bus station and used the bus ticket to make a clean get away. In a series of ?coincidences? the items in the envelope keep saving him at precisely the time he needs them. Michael catches up with an old friend and tries to decipher the message he has left himself before his memory was erased, but he is on the run from the FBI and time is running out. He will need to solve mystery and find out exactly what he has been doing for the past three years and what all the items are for before they catch up with him.
This DVD along similar lines of the Bourne Identity, a man chasing his past and looking for answers. This is a great story I don?t want to spoil the plot, so I?m not going to give you more info, but I will say this was a fantastic twisting tale that was well structured and all the twists worked well. At times the story gets a little far fetched, but come on this is the Hollywood movies after all!. The acting was good and I the characters credible making it an enjoyable movie, the characters were the stereotypical baddies and goodies and it was a great tale, to escape to on a lazy afternoon. If, like me, you have a great list of good stories in your home DVD set then this is a good one to add to the collection.
