50 First Dates
Wow these two (Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler) are great on screen together, there is a chemistry that is just electric with Drew and Adam acting out a love story. If you enjoyed “The Wedding Singer” then you will love “50 First Dates”.
Lucy (played by Drew Barrymore) is an attractive young woman, the perfect girlfriend except for one small flaw - she has no short-term memory. Henry Roth (played by Adam Sandler) is the ultimate womaniser; he enjoys the challenge of making women fall in love with him, and then runs away from them. Henry lives in Hawaii it?s the perfect place for a holiday romance; something Henry enjoys every weekend, with a new tourist.
One fateful day Henry sees Lucy sitting in a restaurant alone and is instantly smitten with her, but Henry is hesitant to get close to Lucy because she is a local girl and Henry is afraid she may be hard to ditch when he gets sick of her. Lucy is so charming that Henry can?t resist and he falls for her the instant he starts talking to her. They make plans to have breakfast in the same place the next day and that is when Henry learns of Lucy?s memory problem.
Lucy was in a car accident a few years ago and has only got memories of her life before the accident, Lucy leads a ?ground hog day? type of life and she has Sunday morning everyday. She eats in the same place wears the same clothes watches the same movie and celebrates her dad?s birthday in the afternoon. Her dad believing that he is doing the right thing has altered his whole life to accommodate Lucy?s memory loss and goes out of his way to ensure she does not find out.
When Henry realises what is wrong with Lucy he then spends each day of his life trying to make her fall in love with him. Some mornings he succeeds and others he fails, but he enjoys the challenge and each day he falls more deeply in love with Lucy and every morning she wakes up and can?t remember him!
This is the most gorgeous story; all romantics at heart would love to be with a man who wakes each morning and uses all his skill to make you fall in love with him. (What a concept!) Adam Sandler is such a great actor and his sense of comedic timing is brilliant. The cast he is working with are so comfortable with each other that the characters become so natural and ?real?. The plot whilst simple is brilliantly clever and unique. Having only just seen this at the cinema in thelast couple of weeks, it?s a timely released DVD that enabled me to make comparisons between the cinema and DVD. Probably one of the best features of DVD is the unadulterated quality of picture and sound. It was almost like being at the movies (I just need a bigger screen!). Sheer magic!
It?s a great story to escape into and one I could watch over and over, I just love this style of movie - all warm and fuzzy, make sure you take this one home for keeps ? don?t lend it to your friend you might not get it back & DVD?s are so cheap now you can tell them to buy their own!
THE EXTRAS
Loads of info on the making of the movie; casting crew, costumes, scripts. etc. There?s heaps here to see; make sure you wade your way through it all (but not all in one sitting!!!). it?s worth it.
Featurettes
Short flicks on the people places and language of 50 first dates.
The first is about dating?.. mainly interviews with the cast and crew and a few stories of how it all came together.
The second is about the language of the Hawaiian islands ? a blurb on pigeon English and some Hawaiian islanders explaining the meaning of common words and dialects.
The third is a featurette about the native people of Hawaii and the actors who starred in the show. It?s a comedy and it quite light heated and in no way is meant to be factual or serious.
The Directors Commentary ? with Drew Barrymore and the director, all a bit boring but these sort of things usually are.
