So Smart Shapes

A DVD for Babies from 6 to 36 months.

This is a DVD designed for 6 to 36 months and follows the tried and true method of repetition, mixed with bright colours, and change of pace every 30-seconds or so, to hold attention for the maximum length of time. This DVD is all about shapes and the makers have cleverly named each shape and given it an animated character. The shape starts off as boring and plain and turns into a brilliantly clever character full of colour and life. The process of building each image and turning it into a character is a formula that manages to hold the attention of a baby.

The background classical music and narration is very unobtrusive and almost blends perfectly to the animation. (This is not a DVD where the music will send you rushing for alcohol). The pace is a great mix of fast and slow and the whole DVD is unpredictable; this is a great way to hold attention. There are also subtle invitations for children to ?join in? and gaps are left in the production to allow children time to ?digest? information or interact.

Well I have to admit I was sceptical about a DVD made for babies; my kids were not real big on TV until they were a bit older than 3. However my 3 year old LOVED this DVD she joined in and clap hands named colours and shape and was delighted when each scene was completed. I played this for a friend?s child (he is aged 10 months) and he really enjoyed it. He seemed to take in the picture and I guess time will tell if he ?learnt anything?, but he was certainly entertained, and enthralled by the TV.

From a purely entertaining purpose this is a fabulous DVD to have for small kids and makes a welcome change to Hi-5 or Wiggles, but the fact that it?s also incredibly educational just adds to the appeal. This has been cleverly put together by people who know how to entertain and teach children and it defiantly a worthwhile DVD to add to the home collection. As with most ABC productions this DVD is available at the ABC shop, (probably at a great price most of them are?..) and would make a perfect gift for a young child. If you know a young baby and have access to a DVD player there is really no excuse to not get this one!
