Beyond Borders

Sarah Jordan (played by Jolie) is a newly married ?yuppie?, her husband is a philandering unemployed son of a wealthy banker and the couple spend their time attending charity events or travelling the world. They live a charmed life and have very little contact with the ?real world?. When Nick Callahan (played by Clive Owen) an African aid worker gatecrashes a charity dinner - organised to raise money for starving kids in Africa - Sarah is forced to face the reality of her life. Nick Callahan highlights the effects of funding cuts to his medical programme in Africa and brings with him a small boy from the refugee camp (who is obviously suffering from the effects of war) to prove his point.

Sarah is upset by this dinner and she decides to use some of her own money to help Dr Nick Callahan and his workers. Sarah charters a plane and personally delivers $40,000 of food and aid to the camp. Nick Callahan meets her arrival with suspicion and hostility, but after a few days he sees she genuinely wants to help. Nick and Sarah find connection with each other and fall in love, both know it is an impossible love the two live in different worlds. The journey changes Sarah?s life, on her return home she joins the UN and becomes a major player in the distribution of aid funding.

Sarah sees her husband for what he is and endures an unhappy marriage for the sake of her children for the next 10 years. But her work with the UN gives her great satisfaction and occasionally contact with Nick. The story follows both her work with the UN and Nick?s renegade work in countries that are war torn and ravaged.

This is a great love story set in a minefield of impossible obstacles. Contrasting the peaceful tranquil life Sarah leads in London with Nick?s life in war torn; Vietnam, Africa, Cambodia and where ever else he is needed. Both of them make a huge difference to their own piece of the world, whilst living under the stress of life. The acting is fantastic and the settings are brilliant. Angelina Jolie is awesome, with her portrayal of Sarah.

The filming in countries around the world is brilliant and the sound and picture quality are of a high standard, and is exactly why DVD is so popular. The DVD runs for approx 120 minutes and is rated R, and although the story is very ?real? like any human suffering story, at times it is depressing and overwhelming. This is not a light-hearted Sunday afternoon flick, and the story is told without and sugar coating so be warned you may need the tissues.

THE EXTRAS

Audio Commentary - Blah Blah Blah I never could understand why someone would sit through a movie with other people talking over the top, but it has some interesting facts on the making of the movie and the director points out what they were tyring to achieve and what went wrong etc etc.

Writing Beyond Borders - facts and snippets of the story and how it all came to be rolled into a movie script.

An interview with Caspian Tredwell-Owen The writer of Beyond Borders.

The bonus features were all a bit serious and after such a strong deep movie the features were a bit ?more of the same?. But they do

give great insight into exactly what the major players were tying to achieve when they made the movie.
