Outrageous Fortune

I have not seen this movie for years and I forgot how funny it is. Bette Midler stars as Sandy, and obnoxiously confident woman who believes she can become a famous actor without any formal training or classes. When Sandy asks to use a phone at an office in the city she meets Lauren played by Shelly Long. Lauren has frittered away a fortune on acting lessons and classes and is now auditioning for classes with the famous Stan Korzenowski, a gifted acting teacher from Russia.

Sandy decides to addition for the course too after Lauren Challenges Sandy?s acting ability. The two women have little in common and virtually hate each other on sight, but they find themselves stuck in the same acting class and have to learn to work together. Things are running smoothly until they find out that they are also seeing the same man ~ Michael a KGB double agent! Neither Sandy nor Lauren know they have been conned by a master spy; Michael and Korzenowski have been using the two women to pass Russian secrets to and from the USA and Russia.

When Korzenowski is suspected of spying, the CIA close in to catch the spies but they escape - Sandy and Lauren help Michael and Korzenowski escape not realising the consequences of their actions. The two women decide to follow Michael and try to work out what is going on, but by the time they catch up with him and realise what has happened they are in too deep to run away. They team up and decide to try to capture the spies together. They follow Michael and Korzenowski to the Mexican border and realise they will need a grand plan and a bit of help if they are going to be successful.

This is an incredibly funny movie, the comedic timing of two of the greatest female comedy actors in the business (Long and Midler) shines in this DVD. The cast is a virtual who?s who of Hollywood and despite the age of the movie it is really only the costumes that date the film. Viewers of this DVD can look forward to; heaps of 80?s music, hair styles and fashion so not only is this a great story but a ?walk down memory lane? for those of us old enough to remember; big hair, the Eurhythmics and legwarmers. Bette Midler is brilliant as Sandy and she and Shelly Long together make a formidable pair in a movie. This is a DVD that is easy to watch and definitely one to add to the home DVD library.

CONCLUSION

Outrageous Fortune is an outstanding comedic adventure of two female would be actors, duped into passing state secrets by two KGB Agents. Lauren and Sandy are as opposite in character as two women can get, but they are dating the same man and have the same acting coach. Can they join forces and trap the spies who have humiliated them both, or will their grand plan fail?
