Tokyo Godfathers

This was a great animation. I’ve always loved a good subtitle movie on SBS and found this one to be really enjoyable. Reading subtitles added to the enjoyment of this film. We are introduced to three homeless people and reminded how tough life is for them. They find themselves scavenging through bins while constantly fighting with each other. They have each other though and this keeps them alive. While doing the bin rounds on Christmas Eve they find a young baby dumped. Even though they don’t have much themselves, they still have hearts to take the baby in to the warmth of their cardboard box.

The transvestite wants to keep the baby, the middle aged man wants to go the police and the young woman doesn’t want more trouble. It seems though the young bub has stolen their hearts and they dish out what they have for a bottle and milk. After a battle of wills they come to the conclusion they must find the baby’s mother. So off they set. They get caught up in a mafia war and are torn apart, slowly finding each other again while clues to the baby’s parents are found. The swearing in this movie was very well used. There were a lot of moments I had a tear rolling down my face from laughter and a few from the touching moments. The characters really worked well together and having been to Japan brought back some vivid memories. If you love subtitles you’d enjoy this.

THE EXTRAS

A great selection of trailers including one for Astro Boy. I don’t think I got as excited about a trailer ever, yet.

CONCLUSION

When a new-born baby is found abandoned in the trash by three-of-a-kind ‘homes’, they decide after much deliberation to find the parents themselves. With three broad-minded people with the Christmas spirit and a lot of help, they not only help the abandoned baby but themselves as well.
