Terrors of Tasmania
The DVD begins with introductions to two of our most awarded documentary makers ? David Parer and Elizabeth Cook and right from the outset you know that they are serious about filming animals as discreetly as possible in order to get an accurate feel for the creature in the wild. More than a fact-finding expedition of the Tasmanian Devil this DVD has footage of Tasmania and shows its wonderful contrasting landscape and diverse and fragile eco system.
This DVD has footage from all over Tasmania and includes never before seen footage of devils in the wild. So much myth and mystery surrounds these unique creatures that are found nowhere else on earth, they have many funny and strange habits and much of the myth is self-created by their unsociable behaviour and way of life.
This was a DVD that I was going to review on my own one quite Sunday afternoon when the kids were outside playing - but after 10 mins of having it on the screen I have all four of my kids in the lounge room glued to the screen ? my 10 year old was last to join us and because of his pleading I ended up starting the disc again so he could see it all from the beginning! I love discs like this because they are interesting, but also very educational kids absorb many useful facts in a subtle way and these facts tend to stay with them. I have to especially comment of the quality of the cinematography the footage was brilliant and it was evident that many hours had been spent setting up carefully planned moments and the devils were clearly unaware of intruding cameras and movie makers and were free to go about the business of living.
The DVD runs for just under an hour and is great time filler if you are looking for something to watch that is quick and thoroughly enjoyable. This is not just a kids DVD and would make a great addition to any home collection. ABC has some great high quality features on DVD and they are competitively priced. If you have not had a trip to your local ABC shop lately ? maybe it?s time you went for a look see!
THE EXTRAS
This DVD have a really fascinating interview with the couple that made this film - George Negus conducting the interview and whilst I?m not sure if it was filmed just for this DVD or not it gives a good insight into these award wining film makers and why they are so passionate about their work and they wild life they bring to your lounge room. Make sure you watch this too it only runs for approx 20 minutes and is well worth the time & effort.
CONCLUSION
Well if there is anything the ABC excels at its documentary making, and Terrors of Tasmania is a classic example of why they have this well-earned reputation. The high quality of both the narration and the footage of the Tasmanian Devil on this DVD are second to none. This is a DVD that will answer almost every conceivable question you could have to do with this magnificent creature from the island state.
