Hello Kitty Goes to the Movies
I have to own up to having little interest in ?Hello Kitty? other than seeing the cute merchandise that has graced store shelves for many years now. I did not know any of the characters names and had never seen a cartoon before so watching this DVD was always going to educate me but not in the way I like my children?s DVDs to.
This DVD has five episodes from a show called ?Hello Kitty?s Furry Tale Theatre? which dates back to 1987 and it basically tries to retell five classic movies using Hello Kitty characters and some really bad voice overs. The voices were so annoying that for most adults it would be nearly impossible to watch the DVD for the full 50 minutes. The characters and their voices seem poles apart and the dialogue is pretty ordinary any way.
Every chance they get they tried to make some reference to the word ?cat?, ?furry? or ?kitty? so much so that it is soooo irritating. Don?t get me started on the corny jokes scattered through each episode either. Let?s just say I didn?t laugh once and they would go completely over the heads of their intended audience anyway. I don?t think references to kitty litter etc would make any sense to a five year old.
Here is a brief run down of the five episodes:
1) K T The Kitty Terrestrial
Talk about taking on probably one of the best films of all time. K.T. and her family go on a picnic to the distant planet of Earth but K.T. gets lost after going off to sight see and her parents leave her behind. She must try to escape the clutches of an evil scientist and her assistant Mr. Grinder who are trying to nab her. Can her friends Sam, My Melody and Chip help her ?phone home? with the radio transmitter they manage to whip up?
2) The Wizard of Paws
Hello Dorothy is whisked away to a magical land of Paws where she is met by the Cowardly Rabbit, Scarecrow Chip and the Tin Penguin. Her aim is to get to Anchovy City to meet the Wizard so she can return to Catfish and be with her family again. Before he will grant her her wish she has to secure the Witchy?s broom. After all Hello Dorothy, ?There?s no place like home furry home?. Arrrrghh!
3) Kitty and the Kong
Hello Kitty, Captain Sam and First Mate Chip are aboard Catnip?s cruise ship when they arrive on an island and meet a large dog called ?Kong? who instantly falls for Hello Kitty. He?s clearly into inter-species relationships. Catnip wants to bring the beast back to NYC so he can appear on Broadway but Hello Kitty and her friends want to save him and return the big boy home. How sweet!
4) Cat Wars
In a galaxy fur fur away Darth Catnip has taken over Princess Kitty?s home planet Caturn (The planet that put the milk in the Milky Way) and attacked her spaceship with C3Sealo, Hop2-D2 and Master Fluke on board . With help from Hobi Catnobi, can Master Fluke save the day and return the planet to the princess? May the fur be with you!
5) Paws The Great White Dog Shark
Hello Kitty along with Lifeguard Sam and Dr. Chip go out to sea to put a stop to the Great White Dog Shark (Paws) who is terrorising Catalina Island and its pier, which is the place to be during the summer months. The Major initially insisted though that there were no sharks, the damage to the pier was merely done by sea termites. They would have be a big ones Major!
I thought my little nearly four year old would hate it, but to my surprise, she took to it instantly and wanted to watch it over and over and over until she has finally moved on to something else. I don?t think it is a DVD that she will be requesting in the future though. The novelty has well and truly worn off and was very short-lived. ?Hello Kitty? is probably only suited to her age group as well. Most children over 5 or 6 would turn their noses up. Adults would simply cringe at how they have destroyed five classic 70s and 80?s films.
?Hello Kitty? didn?t really win us over and I don?t think I will be purchasing any of the other DVDs that were released at the same time as this one. Maybe the year 1987 was where they should have remained. You say Hello and I say Goodbye ! Goodbye! Goodbye!
