Harold and the Purple Crayon

Children?s Animation

2 disc Set

On this disc Harold draws a large purple line and explores life outside the mainstream life, he explores a jungle; he visits the underground world of a colony of ants; becomes a grown up for a day; and drives a train in the great out back.

The animation is in chapters and each disc includes 5 episodes running for approx 20 minutes each. The story is narrated and there is no character dialogue in each episode, the characters communicate with hand signals and body language. The lack of dialogue is made up for with some cleverly placed music and simple songs telling the stories and introducing the characters. The picture is wonderfully clear and in a change from the usual bright colours that can assault the senses this DVD has a nice blend of soothing muted tones and is a great before bed DVD.

All four of my kids (aged 5 to 10) enjoyed this DVD. The story is simple enough and even though the drawings are not the high quality ?Disney Pixar? style of animation stuff that delights everyone; the DVD is thoroughly entertaining for it?s intended young audience. My 5 year old loved watching Harold draw his way in and out of trouble. The softly spoken narrator has a wonderful calming voice and this DVD held all of my kids entranced.

Complete with the option of English subtitles this DVD makes a great gift for any child and is one I am happy to have in our home collection, as it is perfect for a time when a quieter DVD is called for.

THE EXTRAS

No bonus features ? just the usual episode selection and subtitle option

CONCLUSION

The gorgeous animation is bound to become a favourite in any home with younger children. Harold is a special little boy who has a magic crayon that allows him to ?draw? his imagination to life. Harold imagines a situation and draws it and right before his eyes the drawing comes to life and Harold is in the middle of a grand adventure.
