The Best of Ronnie Barker
The blurb on the front cover talks about this being ?Sketches and clips from his greatest television comedy performances?. There are bits from The Two Ronnies, Porridge, Open All Hours and other lesser known shows. It is rather difficult to talk too much about the plot as the jokes are the main feature. It would spoil things to tell them to you so I won?t.
I have always enjoyed Barker and there are moments in this little montage when the old belly laugh surfaced as confirmation that he humour hadn?t dated. However, I thought that calling this the best of what he had done might be just a little of oversell. There are times where the laughs just didn?t come and I find that a little sad given this man?s fabulous reputation and wide body of quality work.
I suppose you can add it to your collection in the knowledge that you will get a laugh and you will remember some of the better bits of his TV series, if only through this set stimulating your memory banks. This is reasonable fare but not a comprehensive main course.
THE EXTRAS
Disappointingly there is nothing but the footage. There could have been some historical review of his works down the years but even something as simple as that is missing.
CONCLUSION
The BBC has put together a series of clips from various Ronnie Barker productions that will bring some belly laughs and stimulate the memories of those who remember how clever Ronnie and his offsiders were.
