Come In Spinner

Another great classic drama from the ABC collection, starring Lisa Harrow, Kerry Armstrong and Rebecca Gibney.

For the technically minded, the aspect is 4:3, Running time is 213 minutes, with sound in stereo and no sub titles. It does have a scene selection capability with each episode.

DISC 1 Episode 1 & 2

Set mainly in a Hotel Beauty Salon in Sydney, it follows the lives of the three women who are employed as therapists in the Salon over a week in October, 1941, and the many people whose lives intersect with theirs. Lisa Harrow plays the hairdresser who is a bit of a rebel, having an affair with a married serviceman. Kerry Armstrong is the masseuse and a young Rebecca Gibney is a credible makeup artist and beauty therapist. I was reminded of the snobbery of the very rich, when one of the guests at the Hotel objected to the employee using the front entrance to the Hotel, and also when she and her daughter attended the Fund Raising Ball, only to be confronted with the Beautician, also there. They tried to have her removed from the premises, but failed dismally when one of the visiting Yanks took a liking to her and has his photo taken at the Ball, and to their dismay, it was the only picture published in the ensuing Society account of the Ball in the Sydney Morning Herald.

DISC 2 Episode 3 & 4

The next two episodes continue the story. They have the side accounts you come to expect from a war story. People going on leave and returning hastily to the front, sooner than expected; all of which make the best laid plans come unstuck.

I had not seen this series when it aired on ABC TV, so the ending and tying up of all the loose end took me completely by surprise. It certainly wasn?t what I expected and had I been writing it, not how I would have ended it. That being said, I loved what they did, and would not now change one word.

When the introduction read ?Executive Producer Sandra Levy? I knew I could expect a show of high standard, well made, great story line with authentic costuming, styles and colours true to the Era, as well as all the settings being true to the time. She takes great care to reproduce an authentic, credible story and has succeeded brilliantly with this. It would make a great addition to your Library of Australian Classics.
