Beyond Jurassic Park

THE EXTRAS

From a dissapointingly uninspired menu page we are given the option to watch extras from either one of the three Jurassic Movies.
Jurassic Park
Original Featurette 4m50s
Short featurette which has nothing that you haven’t already seen before in the orignal releases extras.
Steven Spielberg directs Jurassic Park 9m05s A montage of shots of Steven on set offers little insight into his directing process. This had the potential of being very interesting if given some more depth.
Animatics:T Rex attack 7m20s Mostly storyboards with some early concept animatics of the T Rex attack on the tour car
Hurricane In Kunwai 2m Some handy cam footage of the shoot being held up by a hurricane which struck early in principal photography
ILM & Jurassic Park: Before and After Visual Effects 6m30s Not everyones cup of tea but this kind of extra is exactly why I love DVDs. Using split screen we see the original footage of several scenes in the movie compared with the final shot with the special effects included.
Universal Mediterranea An inexplicably dull ad for the latest Universal theme park which is included in each of the three sections of the disc.
The Lost World
Original Featurette 13m15s The usual press release styled doco where everyone pats each other on the back and informs us how we aint seen nothing yet. This featurette however wisely chooses to ignore the San Diego part of the movie.
Interview with Michael Crichton 15m
An interesting interview with Michael Chrichton where he discusses writing the two novels and the impact the first had on his career. An excerpt of a later interview is also included where he discusses his joy over having a dinosaur named after him.
ILM & The Lost World: Before and After 20m30s
Yeah baby this is the stuff. The split screen is back allowing us to see the original footage and the final shot with the special effects in it. Very interesting.
The Compie Dance: Thank you to Steven Spielberg The ILM team show that they do have too much time on their hands with this annoying piece of animation featuring the Lost Worlds littlest dinosaurs dancing in a chorus line.
Universal Mediterranea Same as in the Jurassic Park section - next!
Jurassic Park 3
Special Effects of Jurrassic Park 3 9m30s
Well it’s what we come to see in these movies. Stan Winston and the other effects crews talk up their efforts for the third instalment.
Sound of Jurassic Park 3 Composer Don Davis, Foley artists Jena Vance & Denny Thorpe, and foley mixer Tony Eckert talk about their processes for creating the sounds for Jurassic Park 3. The foley artists are of particular interest - they are a strange lot.
ILM press reel 10m10s
A surprisingly dull set of before and after effects shots to showcase ILMs work in JP3. Why they need to repeat the scenes over & over is beyond me.
Art of Jurassic Park 3
Jurassic Park the Ride A brief bit of fottage taken as if you were a passenger on the ride. I enjoyed this as I have been on the impressive ride but for those who haven’t this is probably not essential viewing.
Universal Mediterranea zzzzzzz

Overall, nothing essential here. Completists will be annoyed by it’s existance. Those who haven’t already brought the DVDs are rewarded for their apathy (and ironically are unlikely to watch the features anyway)

CONCLUSION

Annoyingly for all those who already have them, the Jurassic Park DVDs are getting another release. This time with an extra disc of newly unearthed extras from the three films.
