Bewitched

Bewitched is the story of Isobel Bigelow played by Kidman, Isobel a real life witch who just wants to be normal, she gives up her magical powers in search of a ?mortal? life. Vowing to never use magic again (except in cases of emergency). Isobel rents a suburban home and moves in. Not too sure how to begin her normal life Isobel goes to the Library to read up on the subject and bumps into Jack (played by Will Ferrell). Jack is a washed up movie star that has been offered the lead role in a remake of an old TV sitcom called Bewitched.

One look at Isobel and he knew she would be perfect playing the part of Samantha the witch who falls in love with a Mortal man on the TV show. After much convincing, Isobel agrees to play the part and the show enjoys great success. But Isobel is trapped playing a part where life is imitating art and of course she falls in love with the arrogant and self centred Jack.

Torn between wanting to cast spells and wanting to be normal Isobel tries hard to ?Be Good?, sometimes without success. Isobel?s father played by Michael Caine is of no help whatsoever, he falls in love with Iris the woman who plays Endora in the sit com. Iris, Played by Shirley Mclean is a strange mix of magic and innuendo and Isobel is still not sure if she is a witch or not? Will Isobel ever be able to convince Jack that her love for him is not a spell?

This was a great take on the original successful TV Sitcom, although I was a tad disappointed at how ?shallow? the characters were, maybe they tried to jam so much into the allotted time that they left no time for character development. The story is full of stereotypes and whilst MacLaine and Caine were brilliant, even they were unable to turn this into the box office hit it should have been.

This DVD is great for a lazy weekend on the couch with friends but not if you are looking for anything other than mindless entertainment. As a huge fan of the original Bewitched I would have liked ?more of the same? in the remake, but well you can?t please everyone! The DVD is presented with exceptional quality in both the picture and sound and the movie is one that makes a great addition to a home collection. This is definitely a ?Chick Flick? but with DVD?s being so affordable at the moment Bewitched would make an excellent gift for the Girl who has everything!
