High Def Sales Underperform in 2006
Recent reports have revealed that while it was expected that consumer demand for High-def video would lead to combined Blu-ray and HD-DVD hardware sales of around 750,000 in 2006, the reality was the much lower 250,000 unit mark. A sure sign that consumers just aren’t prepared to get involved until the Blu-ray/HD-DVD format battle is over.
At the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas last week, it seems that the World’s leading Porn Producers are all heading in a single direction - HD DVD. This decision, however, is not entirely by choice. Reportedly, one of the USA’s biggest Porn Producers, Digital Playground, said it supported Blu-ray but its first movies will be HD DVD. There is still some question if Sony, one of the leading Blu-ray backers, will “allow” porn on the Blu-ray format. Indeed, some blame Sony for inhibiting porn titles on Betamax, which helped tip the balance with the previous format war. Furthermore, HD DVD is currently seen as being cheaper to produce. “It’s a lot less expensive to use HD DVD,” said Jackie Ramos, vice president of DVD production at Wicked Pictures.
