Blu-ray vs HD-DVD: Will either win?
With Paramount and Dreamworks now exclusively on HD-DVD, can Blu-ray still win the format battle? Blu-ray may be selling in higher quantitiies but it is more expensive than HD-DVD, both to the consumer and the movie studios. Up until now I’d have said that Blu-ray had a clear advantage but with less studio support and higher prices, I can’t help but think that HD-DVD is back in with a fighting chance.
The problem I see is that in Australia we’re mostly spending our money on 720p screens and the difference between 576i and 720p isn’t so great that a good scaler wouldn’t give you a damn fine picture anyway. Maybe the average consumer will simply decide that DVD is good enough and pass on the whole HD thing entirely.
And let’s not forget that there’s always the next big thing just around the corner. Battle it out for too long and maybe that third, as yet unknown, contender will slip in through the back door and wipe the floor with both of the formats.
Only time will tell I guess…
